Lent begin today , commemorate the story of Jesus and some friends trammel in the desert , starving , red-hot , miserable , and lure by Satan . A reminder of piousness . It ’s also a depressing reminder of how cripplingly addicted we are to Facebook .
The idea behind Lent , if I ’ve readthis Wikipedia entrycorrectly , is giving up a vice ( rent ’s say , smoking , fatty foods , or booze ) and add an activity that brings you closer to God . Like , I do n’t know , helping deliver babies ( ? ? ? ) . But the gift up bit is what gets the most attention , as it ’s a sight easier to gasconade about your privation , specially in the historic period of easy online communion . But some quick searching shows that the best way our teens , tweens , and other American imbeciles can link their lives to the Biblical excruciation of Christ is to forgo Twitter or FB for a few workweek . Which is … sort of missing the point .

There might be an logical argument that Facebook actually is one of the great vices of our time , more destructive to the ego and others than any confect Browning automatic rifle or nursing bottle of beer , more alienating than any swarm of cigarette smoke or assert Logos . Or maybe it ’s just the easiest austerity cadence available to us , and hey , at least we ’ve got Pinterest , y’ all !
