I was incredibly excited when I saw that Adam - Troy Castro , one of my favorite short - fib writer , had last issue a novel . And Emissaries From The Dead is as great as I ’d hoped , a noirish murder mystery set inside an stilted surroundings created by A.I.s for some unknown purpose . As with the best police detective novel , Andrea Cort ’s murder probe uncover a slew of other mysteries , which unravel the dark enigma of the artificial intelligence and the humans ’ expedition to study them .
In envoy From The Dead , Andrea Cort is an research worker for the DipCorps , the humans ’ diplomatical organization which keeps its members in a grade of indentured trucking rig - slavery in exchange for getting them off their diabolical homeworlds . Cort has her own horrendous closed book , and has been branded a state of war criminal , but corruption turns out to be the norm in the DipCorps . ( One feature I liked about Emissaries was its use of spaceships with nap chamber in place of the easy conjuring trick fast - than - lighter drive . It mean Cort is really on her own in deal with the unknown liquidator . )
Cort gets assigned to One One One , a tube - shape hokey environs altogether with artificially direct intelligent life form , the Brachiators . The home ground has artificial gravity , artificial Sun … and a terrible toxic air at its centre . The humans last in a labyrinth of hammocks string up over a out-and-out cliff into the toxic swarm . Oh , and did I mention the A.I.s have create anatomically right dragons , which fly around just below the humans ’ levels , breathing fervency at anyone who comes too near ?

I do n’t want to give away too much of Emissaries ’ patch , because the twists and turns are a vast part of its appeal . I will mention that it prompt me of a Ross MacDonald novel , in that Cort essentially stomps into this complex nest of relationships and secrets , and leaves them a shambles . jolly much everybody has a secret , and she ca n’t solve the main mystery until she unveil the corruption and internecine war that have been going on long before her arrival . The actual murder closed book involve two womanhood who have been killed in prominent and macabre ways , by someone who retain beam Andrea Cort crashing and disturbing holograms of her own torture and execution . ( To be fair , though , I sort of guessed the central murder mystery about a third of the way into the al-Qur’an , but the world - building and other mysteries were absorbing enough that I did n’t care that I was right . ) Andrea Cort is almost comically foolhardy , with a demise wishing mix in with a willingness to do whatever it hire to push her opponent ’s bridge player .
The other awesome panorama of Emissaries is the Porrinyards , a male person - female couple who are cy - linked , meaning they ’ve become one someone with a shared knowingness . They often speak in unison , and have sex with other masses as one person , so it ’s sort of like a threesome but sort of not . The gestalt - twosome thingy means that they can be apart , but each of them knows what the other is see . ( And when only one of them is asleep , he / she can shape the other ’s dreams . )
The room the novel ends , plus the “ An Andrea Cort Novel ” tag end on the front , make up it look as though this is the first al-Qur’an in a serial of standalone mysteries set in this universe of enslaved diplomats and semi - omnipotent A.I.s . I really trust that turns out to be the case , because both Cort and her existence have terrific scope for development . Emissaries From The Dead
