It ’s a practice that ’s abject at best and outright deceptive at worst . And now , a coalition of trade union movement union is taking the e - commerce colossus to task . The Strategic Organizing Center ( SOC ) fileda complaintwith the Federal Trade Commission on Wednesday , alleging that the company is n’t doing enough to severalise pay advertizement from organic search results — and gip customers in the process .
First account bythe Washington Post , the complaint is built off an SOC analysis of more than 130,000 hunt resultant for some of the most popular products on the chopine , like air fryers , lawnmowers , and iPhone case . The solvent were staggering—28 % of the lookup answer that crop up were actually pay ads , grant to SOC .
Amazon certainly is n’t the first major tech company to try luring consumers into clicking more ads by gussying them up like hunting effect — hell on earth , Google got chewed out by users after trying to commit the same crapback in 2020 . Google , for its part , quickly walk backon that redesign .

Unless Amazon does the same , there could be some serious FTC penalisation involved . These variety of scammy tactics might fall under subdivision 5 of the FTC Act , which interdict “ unjust or delusory act or practices , ” in the commerce sphere . The way the agencyputs it , it all boils down to a consumer ’s right to make informed decisions about what they buy . When those consumer get con by an advertising that await like a hunt outcome , they ’re arguably losing some of the power to make those choices .
