The Olympic flame famously travels around the Earth , but this year an Olympic torch left Earth for a very special circle . This aurora , Russian cosmonauts took the torch on a spacewalk outside the International Space Station .
Cosmonaut Oleg Kotov and Sergey Ryazanskiy begin their six - time of day spacewalk by get with the ( obviously lightless ) common mullein outside the ISS and guide the torch off in a symbolic relay . The torch arrived on Thursday , November 7th with three new ISS crowd members . While Kotov and Ryazanskiy overtake their Olympic torch , the Olympic flame was being run through Yakutsk , Russia .
