Most superheroes fare prepacked . laughable book history has long dictated their origins , power , and adversaries , andmost superhero moviessimply follow suit of clothes . A rare exclusion comes in the shape of Ant - Man and the Wasp ’s scoundrel . The character ’s stemma are mucky and their powers are rather pliant . So theatre director Peyton Reed used those secret to craft a mostly new baddie dead suited to his film .
That villain is the Ghost and , in the comics , he ’s a mysterious hacker with a muscular suitthat let him teleport things , move through thing , and snap people . The movie edition take over a few of those trait , but for the most part , it ’s a reinvention , starting with thecasting of Killjoys actress Hannah John - Kamenand go all the way down the melodic phrase .
“ We needed somebody who was going to be formidable against Ant - Man and the Wasp as a team , ” Reed told io9 . “ [ And ] we have a very specific tone we ’re doing in the Ant - Man motion picture . So , in general , I think that suit take care nerveless , I thoughtthe tycoon set was potentially cool , and when we collide with on the idea of doing a gender trade and tying her origin into Hank Pym ’s past , it felt like it could pose well in that [ tone ] . ”
The tone was authoritative but a strong consolidation into the story was the real key . In Ant - Man and the Wasp , Ghost ’s origin dates back to when she was just a little girl named Ava . Ava ’s father worked with Hank Pym ’s engineering science and had a frightening accident . The chance event kill her Father of the Church and gave her the incredible power to move through objects . However , those powers are painful and potentially deadly .
By tying Ghost ’s origin straightaway to Hank ’s Quantum research , it give the character a direct difference of opinion with the hero as well as a complex emotional core . She has to slip Pym ’s lab before it ’s too late and she pass .
“ I really wish the musical theme that these powers are really unnerving but , for her , they’remore of [ an ] afflictionthan they are a benefit , ” Reed said . “ And it felt like there could be some poignancy to that . It [ also ] ties her directly to the commission . There ’s a very specific understanding why she ’s come to them as an out-and-out obstacle in their journeying . ”
An obstacle for the filmmakers was this : If you have this character with these largely undefined optical powers , what exactly do they face like ? find the resolution was a process .
“ We played around with [ the ] effects and some of them feel too two dimensional , ” Reed state . “ There was one batch of effects that come in and was like Max Headroom from the ‘ eighty . [ I thought ] ‘ This is not locomote to work . ’ ”
If you ’ve seen the movie , you acknowledge eventually it did work . The Ghost ’s effects are among the most impressive visuals we ’ve view in a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to date , specially one based on Earth . That naive realism was a winder to getting the effects correct .
“ [ We ] flirt with light and made the luminosity a little prismatic , ” Reed said . “ It draw into what we were doing in the Quantum Realm [ and ] made it find as photographic and optical was possible , as opposed to sort of more digital . ”

“ There were some things that just aesthetically felt good to us and really felt different than effects we ’d seen before , ” Reed said . “ But it could n’t overtake that character . It had to have a sure level of shade to it or it would just get annoying . ”
In a universe of characters who are well - delimitate even before they make it to the big cover , Ghost is not at all pestiferous . She ’s fascinating .
Ant - Man and the Wasp is now in theaters .
