What ’s great about “ First Born ” is not just thewhip - cracking repartee between Dean and Crowley . Or Mark Sheppard ’s immaculate comic timing , and his ability to sell an entirescene with afew well - opt facialexpressions .
Rather , it ’s the fact that the instalment actually manage topull a somewhat neat trick : For most of its running length , we think we’reseeing a brand new side of Crowley . He in reality seems panic-struck and freak out when he finds out that their questto retrieve the First Blade ( the one weapon that can put down the Hell KnightAbaddon ) has brought them to the home of Cain , the First Murderer and mostfamous friendly fire of all time .
Sheppard does a great chore of making Crowley seem authentically terrified to meetone of the nastiest customers in the Bible , which ratchets up the episode’stension as you start to wonder if Dean has ultimately ramble right smart out of hisdepth .
And then , in the episode ’s last moments ( see above ) , we geta very dissimilar version of the traditional “ Let ’s process our feeling bythe Impala ” prospect . And it turn out that in reality , Crowley has been playing Dean all along . Crowley pretended to besurprised about the whole “ Cain ” byplay , when in fact he wasmaneuvering Dean into taking on the Mark of Cain and becoming the newfangled owner ofthe First Blade , so he can have Dean do his dirty work ( yet again . )
The fact that Dean is pissed , but also sort of accept this — even admit the destruction of their dad ’s old partner Tara , who sets a newrecord for “ soonest death of a badass female person in Supernatural ” — is kind of amazing . Dean earn a sort oftoken shrug at threatening to kill Crowley , but his heart really is n’t in it .
And it sucks , because Tarawas awesome . And she was correct that Dean is a half-wit .
The Cain storyline was also astonishingly great , because thisshow managed to get hold a firebrand Modern box of Biblical mythos that it had n’t yetcapitalized on , and a decent spin to go with it . Turns out Cain actually killedAbel to protect him from Lucifer , giving himself to Hell in his brother ’s place — in a very Winchester - like act . And all this time , Cain has been taking therap unfairly .
Also , Cain prepare the Knights Who Say Ni of Hell , andkilled all of them except Abaddon . He tried to pull back from being a Hell Knight , and fell in love and got married — but then the Knights found him and Abaddon possessedhis married woman . ( It ’s only thanks to his wife ’s dying want that he did n’t killAbaddon . )
It ’s dainty to see the show coming up with a new spin on itsold themes of family and redemption and destiny and fair sex getting killed tomotivate the dudes .

Meanwhile , in the “ B ” plot of land , almost nothinghappens . Castiel and Sam kind of hang out . Cas palpate sad that he ca n’t tastesandwiches any more , now that he ’s human again .
Oh , and Cas tries to educe the stay bit of Gadreel’sgrace from Sam , so they can use the remnants to cut across Gadreel and gank thebastard . But he ca n’t do it without possibly drink down Sam , so he hold back short — thus rise that Cas has modify , and he ’s no longer as much of a illegitimate ashe once was . Oh , and Sam want to bolt down Gadreel because it ’ll make up for allhis mistakes , such as not closing the gates of Hell when he had the hazard .
Sam does n’t even realize that Tara , the coolest new role we ’ve met in ages , give-up the ghost in this very sequence becauseof Sam ’s determination not to come together the gates of Hell . Not that we ’re acrimonious oranything .
