Earlier this month , NATOlost a undercover agent bourdon in Iran . ab initio NATO admit that itspilots lose controlof the craft , but new reports take that the Persian military hacked its GPS systems .

The Christian Science Monitor reportsthat the Iranians hijacked the drone by using software that spoofed GPS coordinates , forcing it to land wherever they opt . An unnamed Persian engine driver isreported to have saidthat they reconfigured the GPS system of the RQ-170 Sentinel , forcing it to “ land on its own where we wanted it to , without having to crack the remote - dominance signals and communications . ”

“ The GPS navigation is the light point , ” he continue . “ By place noise [ jamming ] on the communications , you force the shuttlecock into autopilot . This is where the birdie lose its brainiac . ”
It may pay to be at least partially sceptical about the claims though — after all , it ’s in Iran ’s best involvement for us to believe they hacked the craft . And the way the locomotive engineer claims it was done raise some questions . How did they know where and when to find the drone ? And does n’t the drone have other navigational systems to fall back on if its GPS system are hack ? We ’re not sure .
But maybe that dewy-eyed taxicab was effective enough forIranians to get their manus on the drone pipe . Because according toa account cited by The Register , military officials have known about the craft ’s Global Positioning System vulnerability since 2003 . The report states :

A more pernicious attack involve feeding the GPS receiver false GPS sign so that it believes it is located somewhere in space and time that it is not … This ‘ spoofing ’ attack is more elegant than jamming because it is surreptitious .
One affair ’s certain : I intend it might be time to posit that vulnerability . [ The RegisterandThe Christian Science MonitorviaCNET ]
