Last week , researchers using the James Webb Space Telescope ( JWST ) announced they had found something challenging on a distant exoplanet called K2 - 18 b : a potential puff of dimethyl sulfide ( DMS ) , a molecule that , on Earth , is produced almost entirely by microscopical nautical life . The exoplanet , located about 120 light - years away , orb within the inhabitable zone of a reddened nanus star and may be a Hycean cosmos : a turned on , sea - covered planet with a H - rich atmosphere .

Believing instead that this is DMS of biological origin would call for subvert our every expectation as to the clime of this planet , without any other grounds to do this from the data .
In other words , we are a retentive mode from believing K2 - 18 vitamin B complex can be inhabited , let alone is dwell .

This is a very interesting new dataset . It appear that there are unexplained features in the spectrum of K2 - 18 b , which could be assign to dimethyl sulfide or dimethyl disulfide . However , these upshot are stretching JWST to its limits ( K2 - 18 b is a fairly small satellite ) , and it ’s potential that further analytic thinking may obtain a lack of statistically important evidence for these characteristic . We need more astronomer on this case as soon as possible ! Currently , I ’m scheme but cautious about the potential presence of these molecules on K2 - 18 b.
Even if DMS or DMDS are present , we must be very careful in treat them as biosignatures . We ’ve only just begin to inquire query about the abiotic scope on this variety of planet . The whole thing is completely blown out of proportionality . Sorry that I am a bit short in my answer , but I have had to mete out with this in the Dutch and Belgium medium for the last two 24-hour interval , and I am a piddling done .
The research squad find gibbousness in their spectrum . It is not clear whether these are real , and if so , what they could be due to . There could be piles of molecules ( if substantial ) , or even cloud feature of speech . What do the authors do ? They just look whether DMS could make this ( and add DMDS ) . They brush aside the dozens of other species [ i.e. non - biological source of molecule ] that could cause this bump and call it a Clarence Day . If I had been the reviewer , I would have block up this publication in good order there . There is no reason to invoke space biology , let alone call it the big find or whatever .

Most reporters are pen a piece where they say something like “ however , not all scientists are as confident … ” I can tell you , it is much worse than that , but most of us are keeping our mouths shut .
