If you watched the raw Rogue One : A Star Wars Story footage , you probably suppose , “ This movie look so different from other Star Wars film . ” You are right . We spoke with the film ’s director , Gareth Edwards , and he talked about shoot the film in a way that seems radical for a world like Star Wars .
Many of the legal action scene in the preview and new footage are in a variety of desert marketplace called Jedha , and it ’s a placement that ’s highly important to the photographic film .
“ We rifle to Jordan to shoot and we built this lot in Pinewood that was 360 stage so you could kind of look wherever you want , ” Edwards begin . “ Normally on a set the duplicate are state , ‘ Okay on action you walk over there and on cut you stop . ’ We said , ‘ Okay for the next hour you ’re cooking food , or you ’re doing this car matter , ’ and the gang were wear upon costumes so if the cameras turned around on them , they would n’t be in the shot . ”
Edwards frivol away many of the scenes in Rogue One in this incredibly organic , naturalistic way .
“ We tried to keep it all flow and the actor were given the freedom to go where they want and do the scene in a way that felt correct , ” Edwards stay on . “ So there ’s a good deal of freedom and it had this organic , different vibe to it than you link sometimes with Star Wars , and so that felt really exciting . As a fan , I wanted to go to these places . It ’s catch ta sense right , that ’s what was a monumental learnedness experience . ”
Edwards sense , by buck his photographic film in this fashion , he was paying tribute to the bequest of the franchise by doing something new .
“ There ’s such a fine line in Star Wars , if you go just slightly to the left it ’s not Star Wars , it ’s another scifi picture that does n’t sense right . And if you go slightly to the right , you ’re just re-create what George did . So hear to navigate this affair where it ’s new but feel fresh was like the saltation that was the process of making the film . ”
The style extended to the other side too . If the Rebels on Jedha were inject very realistically , the Empire got the diametric treatment . They were going to be shot in a more static , traditional Star Wars way of life to differentiate between the two side of the conflict .
“ Initially there was the smell that Rebels will be this one thing and then the Empire will be this other affair , ” Edwards explained . “ But as we got live on we pop commingle it all and it feel a lot better . I was really proud of with the vibe of the moving-picture show in that it changes power train between those classic — what feels like the speech of Star Wars — into something a bit more contemporary and back again . And you ’re not jarred by it . The way I used to judge to justify it was that this is a real historical event and George [ Lucas ] is on Tatooine with his tv camera gang , we ’re on our planets with our television camera crew , and there ’s filmmakers on other planets with their camera crews . We ’re not go to see those movies for a while , but everyone ’s piddle just making their motion picture and they ’ll all have their own little elan and vocalism . ”
One part of Edwards ’ representative that will come through in Rogue One has a phantasmal ingredient . Jedha is appoint that for a reason . It has a connection with Jedi , a group that — hypothetically — doesn’t survive at this full stop in the story . The Empire thinks they ’re mostly gone . That give Edwards a unique opportunity .
“ The era our film is set in theory does n’t have any Jedi . But the approximation of having Star Wars film that does n’t talk about the Force [ just did n’t feel right ] , ” Edwards tell . “ If you see at what George was great at , we got a story about one thing , [ but ] he ’s imply a million other things in the background . Ideas that are much wider . And obviously our flick is using that and telling a account within it . But for me it ’s like , if A New Hope is the story of Jesus or something , there must be a whole religious belief beyond that . And it felt like , ‘ for a thousand generation ’ Jedis were the leaders of this spiritual belief system , there ’s got ta be like the equivalent weight of Mecca or Jerusalem within the Star Wars world . ”
And that humanity will play a cock-a-hoop theatrical role in setting up the level and characters of Rogue One .
“ It felt very contemporary to have a place where the Empire were levy themselves on what means a mountain to the spiritual side of Star Wars for their own reasons , their own goals . And within that area there ’s a electric resistance that ’s building and examine to oppose back , but our characters end up having to go to Jedha and they basically end up getting pulled into their tarradiddle a bit . ”
