Hail the Tiny Moons of Pluto!

Goodnight , moonlight ! These are the best images we ’re going to see of Nix and Hydra , the largest of the little moons swooping around Pluto and Charon .

This explains a diagonal in the photos we ’re welcome from the spacecraft : we had n’t discovered the tiniest moonlight until the spacecraft ’s chief observing targets were already set , so the only devoted photograph were filling in the handful of TBD slots .

Nix is the largest of the small moons , and was closer to the New Horizons spacecraft during the flyby . Both of these think we ’re get better prototype of Nix than of the other small moons .

The oddest characteristic of Nix is a monolithic crater on its broadside . This volcanic crater is so orotund that it ’s borderline between scarring the little world , or really part it into spell . Either Nix got golden , or it ’s a fragment of an sr. , big moon shatter by some old destruction .

Hydra is the next largest moon . As both smaller and on the far side of its orbit when New Horizons zipped through Pluto . It has a uncanny , more complicated shape than Nix , a dual - lobe reasonably consanguineal to the strange shape ofcomet 67P / Churyumov - Gerasimenko . It , too , could possibly be the result of alow - speed collisionof a pair of modest moons . Hydra in colour is less surprising , without any disruption in the muted monochrome surface .

We ’ve yet to see the pic of thediminutive Styx and Kerberos , although they ’ll be gain their way down the4 kB per 2d downlink over the next fifteen months . As the downlink continues , New Horizons is burning to adapt its flight to target it in position for a flyby ofa second Kuiper Belt Object , MU69 , in 2019 .
