There ’s really only one master reason to be interested in Hotel Transylvania 2 : Like the first moving picture , it ’s calculate byGenndy Tartakovsky , the vitaliser best know for Samurai Jack and Star Wars : Clone Wars . And there are some utterly beautiful images in this film , in support of a dreadful tale .

I think Hotel Transylvania 2 is much more beautiful than the first moving-picture show , in fact — havingmade a squillion dollarswith the tale of Dracula ’s luxury hotel for monsters and the human backpacker who bend up there , the studio seems to have loosened the purse drawing string and given Tartakovsky ’s team of animators more resources this meter around .
Or mayhap I ’m just having the Transylvanian variation of Stockholm Syndrome . But I really think that Tartakovsky ’s gift for stylized action , set against a beautiful painterly screen background , comes into its own in this 2nd movie . Where the first Hotel Transylvania had some nerveless moments here and there , I felt like the 2d is much more visually interesting — in a way that these screencaps from the lagger do n’t really convey , unhappily .
Tartakovsky and his squad of animators do really interesting things with light and shadow , enamour the mist over the hotel ’s lake at dark , and the texture of cloud against the full Sun Myung Moon . And the flighty forests of Transylvania have a new shadowy richness this time around , which reminds me ofthe awesome backgrounds that we used to see on Samurai Jack . Also , the grain of bat fur , hair , gelatinous monster goop and other stuff find a flake more amply realized , help the character reference to bolt down against these background house painting .
And the sense of move in the foreground is even more frenetic this fourth dimension , with the characters perpetually breaking out into dance or activity . And the skeletal system is more jam-packed with creatures and mess gags , too .
So it ’s kind of sorry that even as the level of visual prowess in the cinema reaches a new level , the literal storytelling sinks much , much lower .
This time around , the hand is co - write by star Adam Sandler , along with Robert Smigel ( who co - wrote the first movie with Alan Partridge writerPeter Baynham , who did n’t get along back for a 2nd helping , alas . ) So it ’s not terribly surprising that the script is a caboodle slow , but also more callous and awless towards the integrity of the characters .
In Transylvania 2 , Dracula ’s girl Mavis ( Selena Gomez ) marries the gormless packer Jonathan ( Andy Samberg ) . And then we jump onwards , and they have a babe . Cue pot of humour about Mavis wanting to baby - proofread the devil hotel , to Dracula ’s dismay . And meanwhile , Dracula is disturbed that the baby will be human instead of a vampire , and then Mavis will take Dracula ’s grandson to hold up with Johnny ’s family in America . So Dracula is determined to bring out the vampire in his grandson , even if he risks killing the yearling in the process .
So there you have it — it ’s a lot of child - jeopardy humor . And I love child - endangerment humor : There ’s something just marvelous about a baby crawling towards a cliff or almost being flattened by a safe . Everybody screw baby almost being flattened , it ’s just intrinsically rum . But adults endangering small baby is somehow less funny than children blundering into danger by themselves , and after a while the fact that nobody seems to remember it ’s bad to keep almost killing this infant start to drop you out of the film .
And the sense of humour in Transylvania 2 is appreciably less funny than it was in the first pic , which already was kind of dumb . You know that “ Family Guy ” thing where somebody says a random phrase , and then we cut back aside to a 30 - second blip show that phrase really chance ? Hotel Transylvania 2 does that constantly , to the distributor point where it ’s the main source of laffs . There are a number of indolent laugh that get execute into the ground , also .
The dumbing down of the film ’s humour actually go hand - in - claw with its new spin on the melodic theme of behemoth who detest and revere humans . This metre around , the focus is on Johnny and Mavis as a “ mixed marriage ceremony , ” and whether people will be able to accept them and their half - human , half - vampire minor . Plus the question of contemporaneousness , and whether old - school monstrosity like Dracula can adjust to societal medium and smart phones and the fact that what happen in one tiny corner of the world is instantly known everywhere , thanks to Youtube videos and stuff .
And it ’s actually sort of interesting to see these case grapple with modernity — Dracula has a smartphone but he ca n’t make the port turn because of his foresighted lamia fingernail . The inability of the monster characters to make sense of the 21st century kind of mirrors how silent this film ’s narrative is , when place against the sophisticated life .
The other big selling spot in this sequel is the bearing of Mel Brooks , playing Dracula ’s father Vlad . unhappily , he ’s barely in it , and when he finally plow up , it ’s kind of a non - issue .
In fact , this celluloid has one of the biggest third - enactment problems I ’ve ever seen . The film just sort of … stops after the 2nd enactment , and then a third act is construct out of nowhere , as if everybody on the spur of the moment realized they ca n’t just make a 60 - minute movie and have it finish on an bathos .
As usual with this sort of film , you ’re not really going to see Hotel Transylvania 2 under your own volition — you have small tike , they take to be distracted for a couple hour , you require air conditioning and junk nutrient , etc .
