The most important secret plan - change fiber in Guardians of the Galaxy is n’t Peter Quill , and it is n’t Rocket Raccoon . It ’s a 1980s Walkman . Find out for yourself how this obsolete gismo is the warmheartedness of the movie . spoiler out front …
In our sole interview with executive film manufacturer and president of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige , we found out how one little walkman changed the entire form of GOTG .
Why was GOTG the first non - Avengers yoke movie that Marvel made ? Why not protector or Heroes for Hire ?

Kevin Feige : Well the honest answer is because we wanted to do a big place movie . We wanted to do a bragging , out space opera . An out infinite adventure , it had been a long meter since we ’d seen one . We ’d been fan of them our total lives . And we conceive that we had a group of characters , and a plot line , that could add something alone to that music genre . And 10 movies in to our cinematic universe , it feel fourth dimension to be capable to do something very different and very unused and original .
What did you overleap that you want to make ?
The Marvel comic has an amazing amount of cosmic activity , as you get laid . So many of the storylines take billet throughout the macrocosm . We touched on it in the Thor film we advert on it in the first Avengers . But we wanted to do something that spend 99.9 % of the film out and about explore other planets and other world . Being on spaceships , and all that material that we eff . And at the same prison term , do it in a mode that perhaps could allow an worked up backbone for a mainstream hearing that perhaps did n’t have the same kind of fear and nostalgia and love life of science fable that we have or that the io9 readers have . The great matter about Guardians is the lead quality Peter Quill , Star - Lord , is from Earth . Is a human being from our time . And as such has references , start cultural source in finical , that we all bed and all colligate to .

When James Gunn join us and get rewriting the rough drawing , preparing to direct it , he had an even better idea — which was , in the backpack of young Peter Quill ( when he ’s abducted from Earth ) , to have there be a Sony Walkman . With an awesome mix tape in it . Which allowed suddenly the intact film to have a soundtrack to it .
Which , A ) was just awful . It allows you to have legal action sequence determine against … unlike anything you ’ve ever get wind in a scifi space opera house . But at the same time , B ) be an aroused ground tackle for hoi polloi that you and I do n’t needfully require to hang out with , but [ who ] do n’t know science fable , or do n’t care for spaceships going through space .
So that was the game changer when James Gunn was asked , “ What if he had a walkman ? ”

I think it was a very big game - record changer for the movie itself . The very first synopsis that James bear to us ( based on Nicole Perlman ’s draft ) had on the very cover of it just a icon of a walkman and headphones . And it was amazing . It was one of the early things we changed and I think , this is gon na work . This guy is the right-hand guy cable .
