Spiral galaxies like the Milky Way are believed to be one of the most common types of galaxies in the existence . They tend to be active and full of whizz formation , which makes them seem " gloomy " because red-hot young stars shine bright in ultraviolet luminousness . But some spiral wandflower are " red " , aging passively with not much going on or heavily enshroud in dust making them appear red . Now , thanks to JWST , some of these red spirals were retrieve in the very distant universe .

The objects had been discovered before butprevious telescopesdid not have the solvent to see the spiral structure in detail . Their light comes from a meter known as Cosmic Noon , which is between 8 and 10 billion years ago when the universe was experiencing an acute asterisk formation period .

“ While these galaxies were already notice among the previous reflexion using NASA ’s Hubble Space Telescope and Spitzer Space Telescope , their modified spatial resolve and/or sensitiveness did not allow us to contemplate their detailed shapes and properties , ” lead author Yoshinobu Fudamoto from Waseda University in Japan , said in astatement .

As a remarkable improvement over previous IRAC image (above), JWST’s unprecedented spatial resolution and high IR sensitivity reveals the morphological details of the red spiral galaxies (below) RS13 and RS14. This facilitates a detailed analysis revealing hitherto unknown features of red spiral galaxies belonging to the early universe.

The crimson spiral were found in theJWST Deep Field imageof the galaxy cluster , SMACS J0723.3 - 7327 . And it is puzzling that they were found in a single image . In the local macrocosm , the red spirals are about 2 percentage of all spiral galaxy so it could be potential that they are more common in the more distant universe .

The team looked at two in special , call RS13 and RS14 . They were able to specify that they would definitely be classified as red spiral also in the local universe and that RS14 is in spades a peaceful red spiral . The jury is still out for RS13 , which could but be shroud in dust obscuring the young stars .

“ Our bailiwick showed for the first prison term that inactive whorled galaxy could be abundant in the other universe . While this newspaper is a airplane pilot study about coiling galaxies in the early universe , confirming and expanding upon this study would largely influence our understanding of the formation and evolution of astronomic morphologies , ” concluded Fudamoto .

RS14 ’s lightness comes from 11 billion years ago . Due to the expansion of the Universe , the extragalactic nebula is settle 19 billion light - years from us today .

The findings are account in a late article bring out inThe Astrophysical Journal Letters .
