In 2019, Yamaguchi opened up toNBC Bay Areaabout what she’s like as a “skating mom,” with Emma taking on the sport herself.

“Watching my daughter skate is pretty funny. I try to hold back and just be mom, but I’m probably a really bad skating mom because as soon as she looks at me with a question, I jump in,” she laughed.

Speaking with PEOPLE in 2017, the momadmitted that she doesn’t take the icewith her daughter too often.

“It’s great — there’s so many positive life lessons you can learn, even if you’re not competing at that elite level,” she said. “I don’t know if it will be her ‘thing,’ but for now, it’s a great activity for her.”

On the rare occasion she does skate with Emma, Yamaguchi said, “My daughter loves it when I’m out there with her.”
