Astronomers have recover a new and unusual way for planet to organize , potentially explain why planets such as Mars and Uranus end up forming sandwiched between much crowing neighbors . And " sandwich " is the name of the game : The squad are calling the method “ sandwich satellite constitution ” and it is about the constitution of smaller planet when in between two larger planets in the primordialprotoplanetary disc .

major planet issue from this slight dusty disk of material that surrounds a fledgling star . ceremonious wisdom witness bigger planet forming further out , but this might not be the only way . This squad envisions that as two large planets form , a third might also start to make in the center . The bigger unity press and restrict the flow of dust from the outside in , so you end up with two thick band regions on the exterior , like cosmic slice of bread , with a slight filling on the inside .

“ In our study , we pop the question the rings as sites of planet formation ; specifically , that there are sandwich planets presently being formed in those rings . This is very different to the conventional view of satellite geological formation , where we typically expect that the planet organize sequentially from the interior to the outside of the record and get more and more massive further out , " Assistant Professor Dr Farzana Meru , from the Department of Physics at the University of Warwick , suppose in astatement .

" What is also really interesting is that there are instance that we have found from exoplanet observation that actually show this sandwiched planet architecture – where the center planet is less massive than its neighbours ; it is a sensible symmetry of the systems too . ”

Over the last decade , observance of protoplanetary discs from lookout station such as theAtacama Large Millimeter / submillimeter Arrayhave delivered some incredible sixth sense into these chaotic environments , including massive"waterfalls " of materialbetween band and social organisation . And among that chaos , there could be these sandwiched rings .

“ The context we are considering [ planetal geological formation chemical mechanism ] is the spectacular gang and gaps see in old works . We are consider the interrogative : are these rings and gaps position for further planet shaping ? ” Dr Meru posit as she exhibit her study at theNational Astronomy Meeting 2023 .

The team look at 17 real star systems that had mellow enough precision on the masses and radius of the planets against which this scenario can be essay . Six of them looked like they fit the scenario for a sandwiched major planet geological formation , although it is too other to submit if this was the case for Mars .

The body of work is submitted for publication in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society .
