Extricating yourself from a toxic friendship can be tough . Unlike romanticist relationships , there ’s not a ton of advice out there about how to tactfully “ plunge ” a friend . Fortunately , if you ’re struggling to find the veracious words , you may take a few pointers from one of America ’s greatest writers , John Steinbeck .
In the mid-1930s , Steinbeck was close with an aspiring writer list George Albee , Brain Pickingsreports . But by 1938 , the friendly relationship was beginning to sour . Jealous of Steinbeck ’s professional succeeder , Albee began chatter behind his supporter ’s back .
Brain Pickings explains that despite Steinbeck ’s literary successes , including the recent publication ofOf Mice and Men , the source was in the thick of a deeply prove time . He ’d been charge of getting a childhood friend pregnant , and was surrounded by chin-wagging and unkind hearsay .

During that time , Steinbeck discovered that , rather than stand up for his friend , Albee had been fuel these rumour , speaking ill of him behind his back . In response , Steinbeck commence subtly move back from the friendly relationship , give Albee the cold shoulder . Finally , Albee confronted Steinbeck about his detachment from the human relationship . Steinbeck , who famously favor written balance to phone cry , responded with an artfully written detachment letter .
“ I ’d like to be admirer with you , George , but I ca n’t if I have to wear a ring armour shirt the whole time , ” he wrote . “ I wish to God your unhappiness could find some other outlet . But I ca n’t consider you a friend when out of every contact there comes some intentionally wounding affair . ”
While Steinbeck ended his friendship with Albee in no uncertain term , the two manage to reconcile about 12 age afterwards , thoughbiographersnote that the family relationship never regained the level of intimacy it once had .
